Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 your son will undertake a progressive programme in Gaelic, Football, Soccer, Gymnastics, Basketball, Health Related Fitness, Badminton, Swimming, Athletics and Baseball.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 all pupils will follow a programme which will provide for the progressive development of particular skill activities and personal qualities.
Health Related Fitness is an integral component of our programme. At Whiterock Leisure Centre our pupils are inducted into the safe use of the cardio and resistance machines by an experienced member of staff.
Pupils will study Health Related Fitness and three other activities from the following: Athletics Gaelic Football Table Tennis Gymnastics Badminton Football Basketball
Other recreational activities may also be offered during or after normal school hours. Our department endeavours to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage a life long involvement in sport.
External Examinations Our department is very proud of our examination results, continually among the best in the College. Over the last few years we have an average of 83% A – C pass rate in GCSE Physical Education.
Always striving to improve, the department now offers the Edexcel BTEC 1st Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 4 GCSE’s). The course is now in its second year and is open to suitably able and interest pupils.
The Diploma provides pupils with opportunities to gain employment in the sports sector or progress to our Sixth Form Centre to undertake the BTEC National Certificate in Sport (equivalent of 2 ‘A’ levels).
On completion of the National Certificate in Sport, pupils may once again choose to pursue careers in the sports industry or they may progress to third level education.
Departmental Links
External Agencies The department and pupils benefit from our close links with the GAA and IFA. Pupils in Years 12, 13 and 14 are given the opportunity to develop their coaching skills and gain foundation level certificate in Gaelic Football, Hurling and Soccer.

Sports/fun days There are special days in the sporting calendar. On the first Thursday in June all staff and pupils travel to the Mary Peter’s Track for a highly enjoyable Sports Day. The department along with BTEC Diploma pupils organise a fun/sports day for all our local schools Primary 6 pupils which takes place in May/June.
Trips Over the past years the College have travelled to
Class Competitions Class competitions in soccer and hurling usually take place in the New Year and are always very competitive.
Work Placements Should your son decide to undertake the BTEC Diploma course our department can provide him with a safe and enjoyable placement such as a teaching assistant, fitness instructor or assistant coach?
